The importance of the town of Chiusi is mainly due to the
Etruscan influence on its history.
The Etruscan centre here, called
the “Camars”, was of great
importance during the sixth and
seventh centuries BC. It was a
very influential member of the 12
city Etruscan confederation.
Chiusi was ruled by Lars Porsena
in500 BC, and this king was famous
for attacking Rome from 507 to 506
B.C. A most interesting pastime
for visitors to Chiusi, is to
visit the tombs in and around the
town, the lowlands surrounding the
town are filled with them. The
more important of these tombs are
sealed for the preservation of
their contents, though if you have
the right influence and the proper
guide, you may be allowed to see a
few of them. But there are
numerous other tombs whichare
easily and freely accessible, all
you need is a good map and some
refreshments. The town has very
good restaurants that will assuage
your hunger and thirst when you
return.
