Alberobello and the Trulli District
72km
(45 miles) NW of Brindisi, 60km
(37 miles) SE of Bari, 45km (28
miles) N of Taranto.
The
region around the city is famous
for its olive groves. The valley
of Itria is in the centre of a
triangle formed by Bari, Brindisi
and the Taranto. The district gets
its name “Trulli” from the
bee-hive shaped houses all around
the area. These were built in the
thirteenth century, with limestone
walls and conical roofs made of
fieldstone. No mortar is used in
the construction of the houses.
Legend has it that the houses had
to be quickly dismantled in case
of a royal visit, hence the lack
of mortar. Alberobello is situated
at the centre of the Trulli
district, and there are over a
thousand of these buildings in the
city. Alberobello consists of a
maze of cobbled streets, lined on
both sides with “Trulli”,
giving the town a truly medieval
look, and this really worth
seeing. Some of the Trulli have
been converted into shops that
sell a variety of souvenirs.
Beware, if you enter the shop you
will have to buy something from
it.
