SAN REMO
16km
(10 miles) E of the French border,
137km (85 miles) SW of Genoa,
639km (396 miles) NW of Rome.
You can say that San Remo is, and always has been, the
perfect tourist resort. It offers
the visitor everything he expects
on his holiday. The city has been
like this ever since Emperor
Frederick William spent a winter
season in a villa here. Later he
was followed by the Empress Maria
Alexandrova, wife of Czar
Alexander II, along with a Russian
escort that included Tchaikovsky,
who composed his Fourth Symphony
here during a stay in 1878. Alfred
Nobel, the father of dynamite and
the founder of the famous prizes
in Stockholm, died here in 1896.
The booming holiday resort is
today something of a small Vegas
by the sea, it has a casino, a
race track, 18-hole golf course,
and the deluxe Royal Hotel. Its
climate is the mildest on the
western Riviera, and the town
offers mile after mile of
well-maintained beaches.
