Santa
Margherita Ligure
31km
(19 miles) E of Genoa, 5km (3
miles) S of Portofino, 477km (296
miles) NW of Rome.
Santa Margherita Ligure was built in the year 262 AD. It had
many other names including one
connecting to Napoleon. The
present name was conferred on the
town by Vittorio Emanuelle ll in
1863. The city has a single famous
landmark the Basilica di Santa
Margherita, just off the
seafront on Piazza Caprera (tel. 0185-286555).
The inside of this cathedral is
richly hung with Italian and
Flemish paintings, along with
relics of the saint for whom the
town was named. Admission is free
and it is open daily from 7am to
noon, and from 3 to 7pm.
Santa
Margherita Ligure is situated on
the Gulf of Tigullio. Its pleasing
palm-fringed harbor is usually
full of fun seeking tourists, and
the resort offers the widest range
of lodgings at any price that is
suitable to your pocket. It has a
cheerful appearance, with a
boulevard, flower beds, and palms
swaying in the wind. Like all
Riviera towns, the town's sandy,
gravelly beach is jam-packed with
party crowds in fine weather.
There is a narrow road joining
Santa Margherita Ligure and
Portofino. The climate is mild,
even in winter, and this brings in
many of the older tourists, mainly
from Northern Europe.
