The Gargano Peninsula and
the Tremiti Islands
Garhano is the ideal tourist town. Blessed with natures
bounty it is also rich in historic
interest, with monuments that are
Byzantine, Romanesque, Norman, and
medieval. It is situated in the
“Spur” of Italy and is a
hilly, wooded peninsula. It has an
ageless ambience, and the
immaculate salt lakes at Lesina
and Verano offer a variety of
water sports including swimming
and diving, in the mild climate
and caln waters. The best season
for tourists to fully appreciate
nature’s charms is autumn, when
you can enjoy the colours of the
Umbra Forest that is filled with
maples, ashes, cedars, and
chestnuts. The city has a untamed
and diverse landscape and the
coast it sits on is a series of
cliffs, rocks, caves, islets, and
beaches. Vegetable gardens grow
inland on a landscape dotted with
flocks of sheep and goats.
Long ago the neck of land was acyually an island, and over
the years sediment from a river
eventually formed a natural
"bridge" connecting it
to the mainland. Train service
into the peninsula is limited to a
private spur along the
northwestern coast, so for
travelers who want to fully
explore the area by bus or car,
the gateway will be Manfredonia.
