The
Phlaegrean Fields and Herculaneum
The Phlaegrean Fields or Campi Flegrei, as the name itself seems to suggest, offers some
of the more bizarre attractions of
Southern Italy. It is a region of
myth and legend, of epics and
sagas, and the reason for this is
the geography and the archeology
of the place. The fields contain the
dormant volcano Solfatara, the
cave of the Cumaean Sibyl,
Virgil's gateway to the
"Infernal Regions," the
ruins of thermal baths and
amphitheaters built by the Romans,
deserted colonies left by the
Greeks, and lots more. These are
the attractions that create the
eerie sense of medieval dread.
The best place from which to explore the area is Pozzuoli,
reached by Metropolitana (subway)
from Stazione Centrale in Naples.
The fare is .75€ (65¢). Once in
Pozzuoli, you can catch one of the
SEPSA buses at any bus stop and be
in Baia in 20 minutes. You can
also go to Cumae on one of these
buses or to Solfatara or Lago
d'Averno.
