Bergamo
31 miles (50km) NE of Milan, 373 miles (601km) NW of Rome.
A hill town in the Lombard area, Bergamo lies in the Alpine
foothills between the Serianna and
Brembana valleys. The towns’
stone fortifications were built on
earlier Roman foundations, by the
medieval Venetians. Bergamo was a
trading centre of the Venetians
during their years of occupation.
The city consists of two distinct
towns, the Upper town is nine
hundred feet above sea level, it
is terraced and supported by the
original Venetian fortifications.
The Lower town is about half a
mile down the hill, and it
contains many 19th and
early 20th century
buildings on both sides of its
wide streets. The towns business
is run from here, and it holds the
bus and rail stations, most of the
hotels, and the town's commercial
and administrative center.
