TRENT
232km (144 miles) NE of Milan, 101km (63 miles) N of Verona.
Situated in the Southern Alps Trent still has a distinct
Italian atmosphere. It is the
capital of the province, despite
this it remains a sleepy little
town, without much industry, but
with a lot of architectural charm
and a few other attractions. The
city lies on the main rail track
from the Brenner Pass, allowing
travelers to break their journey
here before going further South
into Italy.
This northern Italian city stall basks in its former glory.
The medieval town of Trent, lying
on the left bank of the Adige is
famous as the host of the Council
of Trent (1545-63). Beset with
difficulties, such as the rising
tide of "heretics," the
Ecumenical Council convened at
Trent, leading to the
Counter-Reformation.
